Description

Location:

 
Alexandria is situated on the West Verge of the Nile Delta between the Mediterranean Sea and Mariut Lake. It is considered the second most important city and the main port in Egypt, it handles over three quarters of Egypt’s foreign trade. Alexandria port consists of two harbours (East and West) separated by a T-shaped peninsula. The East harbour is shallow and is used only by fishing crafts and yachts. The West harbour  is used for commercial shipping. The harbour is formed by two converging breakwaters. 

Geographical Overview:

The First Zone is the area extending between berth 5 and berth 15, used for general cargo handling.

The Second Zone is situated between berths 16, 31, and deals with 4 types of activities: combined cargoes including RORO, passenger terminal, stuffed bulk cargoes, and barge discharge.

The Third Zone is located between berths 33 and 47, and is used for handling general cargo and barge
discharge.

The Fourth Zone is located between berths 50 and 68, and is used for handling containers, cement, coal, barge discharge, fertilizers, and general cargo.

The Fifth Zone is situated between zone 71(a) and 85, and is used for handling molasses, timber, some types of general cargoes, barge discharge, grains and flour.

The Sixth Zone (Oil Dock) is situated at the western boundaries of the port, encompasses oil berths 87/1,2,3,4,5, and is used for handling edible oil, oil products and for providing bunkers. It also includes berth 86 situated at the port’s limits, used for handling livestock. The ports does not include oil storage facilities, but oil berths are connected to a refinery through a 2 km. long pipeline.

Approach Area
The port is protected by sea stuns, and two converging breakwaters. The entrance breadth is 400m. approximately. The port is divided into two harbours separated by coal berths and the inner breakwater. The first harbour is called the inner dock and the second harbour is called the outer harbour with a water area of 600 hectares. The first harbour is used for handling general cargo while the second harbour is used for oil and bulk cargo traffic. Pilotage is compulsory for vessels arriving and departing the port. The approach area is 3 Nautical Miles distanced from Negma lighthouse.
Prohibited Anchorage Area
Arriving vessels are accommodated at the external dwelling area, piloted to the outer harbour anchorage area, and then moored on the designated berth at the inner anchorage area.
Pilotage
Pilotage is compulsory for all types of vessels. Pilots board in the designated waiting area to pilot the ship inside to the outer harbour anchorage area, through fairways, inside the inner anchorage area and throughout maneuverings.

Ship Repair
Companies specialized in vessel repair representing Alexandria Shipyard are operating inside the port. Two dry docks and 4 slipways fitted with modern equipment are available, as well as installations for vessel construction. Repair facilities are provided by the Egyptian Company for Shipbuilding and Repair.
